Cold Water Dips – Health Screening & Participant Declaration
Cold water immersion is challenging and powerful, but it puts real stress on the body — especially the heart, lungs, and nervous system. Please read this carefully before entering the water, particularly if this is your first time.
Do NOT enter the water if you have (or think you may have):
- A heart condition (past heart attack, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, heart disease)
- High blood pressure that isn’t well controlled
- Breathing conditions (including asthma, especially if triggered by cold)
- Circulation problems (including Raynaud’s)
- Epilepsy, seizures, fainting, or blackouts
- Cold allergies (e.g. cold-induced hives or swelling)
- Diabetes, especially if you’re prone to low blood sugar
- A recent illness, infection, fever, or chest condition
- Recent surgery or injury
- Are pregnant, unless cleared by a medical professional
- Consumed alcohol or drugs today
- Any condition that affects balance, awareness, or ability to help yourself
If you’re unsure — don’t dip. Sitting out is always the right call.
Important things to know:
- Cold water can cause an instant gasp and rapid breathing
- Your heart rate and blood pressure can spike suddenly
- Cold quickly reduces strength and coordination
- Panic increases risk — enter slowly and calmly
- Staying in too long can lead to hypothermia, even in short dips
Entering the Water – First Timers
For your first cold water dip, enter slowly and with control. Walk in gradually rather than jumping or diving. As the cold hits, focus on slow, steady breathing — long exhales help your body settle. Expect an initial gasp or urge to breathe quickly; this will pass if you stay calm. Only go as deep as feels manageable, and get out immediately if you feel panicked, dizzy, or unwell. Your first dip should be short — seconds, not minutes.
By entering the water, you confirm:
- You have read and understood this information
- You believe you are fit and well enough to take part
- You accept that cold water dipping involves real risks
- You are choosing to participate voluntarily and at your own risk
- You will follow the safety guidance of the group
Listen to your body. You can stop at any time. No pressure. No bravado. Cold water is optional.
